Research & Development

The dedicated research that makes Surbhika the finest incense — measured equally by its fragrance and by its wellbeing.

In a society riding the waves of wellness trends, we constantly scout for authentic paths to well-being. The relevance of Surbhika incense lies in its faithful dedication to this pursuit — embracing the age-old knowledge of natural harmony and meticulous craftsmanship. Each stick of Surbhika is not merely a fragrant delight but a testament to a lifestyle choice that prioritises health and sustainability. This incense is a rebirth of tradition, handcrafted to heal, not harm.

A Symphony of Scents and Peace

As you step through the threshold of your home, imagine being enveloped by an aura of tranquility so pure and natural it feels like a gentle whisper of wind through a serene forest. This is the essence of Surbhika incense — a symphony of scents designed not just to allure the senses but to foster a haven of peace without compromising your health or the environment. In a world where the air we breathe is too often tainted with pollutants and synthetics, embracing products as close to Mother Nature's heart as possible cannot be overstated.

Your Way to Physical and Mental Wellbeing

Why should you care about the absence of hazardous chemicals or artificial materials in the very ambiance of your cherished personal space? The answer lies in the silent story each whiff of Surbhika incense tells — a tale of the meticulous selection of herbs, flowers and resins, each playing their part in a cleaner, more conscientious approach to creating scent. While many products compete with loud claims of enchantment, Surbhika whispers a promise of purity that stands the test of authenticity and a gentle nudge toward a healthier lifestyle.

Embarking on the Surbhika journey mirrors a return to the roots of well-being — where the soothing power of nature is intricately bound with the sensory experience of our everyday lives.

Aromatic Exploration

The team at Anand Goshala is always exploring the enchanting world of aroma, where the mystique of Surbhika incense lies. Incessant research and aromatic exploration have made this ancient practice of burning incense transcend mere fragrance — it becomes a journey to the soul's deepest serenity, a ritual that enhances every aspect of life with its aromatic whispers. With its rich heritage and handcrafted essence, Surbhika incense not only purifies your living space but also connects you to age-old traditions of mindfulness and spirituality.

Ethical Sourcing of Raw Material

In the heart of traditional wellness practices lies a treasure trove of authentic herbs — Gugal, Kapoor, Nagar Motha, Kapoor Kachali, along with Gir Cow Dung and pure desi ghee — each with a legacy of health benefits passed down through generations. Beyond their potent healing properties lies a story of sustainability and empowerment. Ethical sourcing connects us with village women who are the custodians of these precious botanicals. This practice ensures the purity and efficacy of the herbs while supporting the livelihoods of these skilled women, fostering community growth and preserving ancestral wisdom.

Fragrance Innovations at Surbhika

Our research and development department makes a super-hard effort to create an aromatic world of fragrance innovation, where ancient wisdom meets modern creativity to transform Gir Cow Panchgavya and an assortment of herbs into olfactory masterpieces. The Gir Cow, revered for its medicinal and nourishing Panchgavya, serves as a unique foundation for scents that are not only captivating but brimming with wellbeing benefits — a fusion that honours tradition while breaking new ground.

The Challenges We Overcame

Surbhika uses only the Panchgavya base of Gir Gaumata for every single product — never any harmful substance. Building a fragrant world on a cow-dung base, while keeping village women employed and the goshala thriving, has been a daily journey of hard-won breakthroughs. Here are four of them.

Challenge 01

Turning Dung into Fragrance

Creating a base material for dhoop cups, agarbatti, dhoop sticks and chhana tikki that is friendly to people, the environment and the goshala — made in a process that keeps needy village women employed — is a dream in itself.

Cow dung carries a distinct smell that few users enjoy. Transforming it into a captivating fragrance that large numbers of people love takes an expert and relentless effort. Our research team has developed the top notes and mild notes from the cow-dung base — crossing the bridge between challenge and success.

Challenge 02

Purity, With No Shortcuts

Making products from gaumay (cow dung) means passing through many difficulties — a challenge-filled daily routine, with never a harmful substance added.

Collecting dung free of dust and soil is work that cannot be handed to hired labour. It is accomplished through the daily effort of Surbhika's own family members, carried out with the feeling of family — and that itself is no small challenge.

Challenge 03

Chhana Tikki — A Daily Yagya

Any dried dung cake, given time or humidity, quickly attracts organisms. Without adding any chemical or toxic element, our research team worked hard to make products that last long without spoiling — such as Chhana Tikki.

Its purpose is "a yagya every day": used in every home to keep the environment not just fragrant but germ-free and pure. Making a cake that smoulders slowly and steadily to the very end took many challenges to solve — today Chhana Tikki is our most demanded product, loved in homes, offices, factories, hotels, hostels, temples and yoga centres.

Challenge 04

Building Our Own Machines

At Surbhika, both machine-made and hand-made products are created. Around 2013, machines to make dhoop sticks simply were not available.

Through constant experimentation, Surbhika built its own customised machines — not only for dhoop sticks but also rare and complicated machines for Chhana Tikki. After successful trials, we now craft captivating fragrant products across agarbatti, dhoop cup, dhoop stick and chhana tikki categories.

“गोबर से बने उत्पाद महंगे नहीं होते — मूल्यवान होते है”

Products made from cow dung are not expensive — they are valuable. Collecting desi cow dung, cleaning, drying and finely grinding it, then blending in exactly the right herbs — often sourced and prepared by our women themselves for assured quality — and ensuring nothing ever spoils, is the greatest craft of all. Add the effort, the electricity and the labour, and the truth is clear.
